LA Sees Cooler-Than-Average Weather as Western Heat Wave Winds Down

Los Angeles heat wave

LOS ANGELES — Southern California’s biggest city is getting a welcome break from the heat that’s been gripping much of the West, with cooler-than-normal conditions settling in across the region as June draws to a close.

After a stretch of warmer, more humid days, Los Angeles is now seeing the kind of mild weather that residents associate with the marine layer rolling in off the Pacific.

Forecasters say a persistent onshore flow has been pulling cool ocean air inland, bringing back the low clouds and morning fog that locals know as “June Gloom.” That pattern has kept daytime highs well below what’s typical for late June in Southern California.

FOX Weather meteorologist Jane Minar described the situation as giving Los Angeles “some reprieve” compared to other parts of the West, where the heat wave has hit much harder. While inland communities like Fresno are baking in temperatures near the high 90s, LA isn’t facing anywhere near that level of heat.

Forecasts call for highs in the low to mid-70s in and around the city today, with coastal neighborhoods seeing some of the coolest readings. That’s a significant difference from what residents might expect heading into summer, when temperatures often climb much higher this time of year.

Areas farther from the coast aren’t getting quite as much relief. Inland sections of the LA area are expected to push into the 80s, but even those numbers are running below the typical late-June average for the region.

The contrast highlights just how much the coastline is shaping the city’s weather right now. As the marine layer pushes inland each day, it cools things down before the sun has much chance to heat things back up.

Meteorologists note this kind of pattern is common for Southern California, but the current stretch has been more persistent and widespread than usual, covering both the coast and a good portion of the inland valleys.

According to the National Weather Service, this cooler stretch isn’t expected to be short-lived. Forecasters anticipate the trend will hold through the weekend, meaning Angelenos can expect several more days of below-average temperatures before summer heat potentially returns.

The timing comes as much of the broader Western U.S. continues to deal with an extended heat wave, one that has pushed temperatures well above seasonal norms in numerous states. Los Angeles, often associated with sunny, warm weather and its status as a hub for entertainment and tourism, finds itself in a comparatively fortunate position this week as it sidesteps the worst of the regional heat.

For residents and visitors alike, the milder conditions offer a chance to enjoy outdoor activities without the discomfort that often comes with summer heat spikes. Whether it’s a walk along the coast or exploring the city’s many outdoor attractions, the cooler air is expected to make for comfortable conditions through the next several days.

As always with Southern California weather, conditions can vary significantly between coastal and inland areas, so residents in different parts of the region may experience the cool spell differently depending on their distance from the ocean.
