Wildfire Erupts on Redlands Mesa Near Colorado’s Western Slope, Forcing Evacuations

Wildfire Western Slope Colorado

Redlands Mesa, Colorado – A fast-moving wildfire broke out on Thursday evening, prompting fire officials to call for evacuations as crews scrambled to respond.

Fire Too Intense for Ground Crews

The blaze ignited at the intersection of North Road and Rimrock, according to the Hotchkiss Fire District. Officials said the flames grew so intense that ground crews could not safely approach, forcing them to rely on aerial resources instead.

Helicopters and other air support were called in to attack the fire from above while ground teams focused on protecting nearby homes and structures rather than confronting the flames directly.

Fire officials urged anyone in the surrounding area to stay away as the situation developed. Residents who believed they could be in the fire’s path were told not to wait for an official evacuation order before leaving. Several evacuations were already underway in parts of the area by Thursday evening.

According to residents commenting on the situation, the fire appeared to be burning roughly a mile east of homes in the area, with smoke drifting south and east.

One commenter described seeing a helicopter working with a water bucket between the town of Delta, where two rivers converge, and the fire zone, several miles east of Delta, as of around 7:30 p.m.

Location Sparks Confusion Among Residents

The fire’s location drew some confusion online, with several commenters noting that “near the Western Slope” is a broad description covering a large region of Colorado.

Local residents clarified that the fire was burning east of Delta, near Hotchkiss, at the North Road and Rimrock intersection, not closer to Grand Junction as some had assumed.

Officials have not yet released information on the fire’s size, containment percentage, or the number of structures threatened. Authorities have also not confirmed a cause for the fire at this time.

Residents in the region were encouraged to download wildfire tracking apps to monitor the blaze’s progress in real time, as conditions on the ground were changing quickly on Thursday evening.

The Hotchkiss Fire District said it would continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Officials have not released a timeline for when evacuated residents might be able to return home.

The wildfire comes during what has been an active period for fire activity across the Western Slope, an area known for its dry conditions and rugged terrain that can make firefighting difficult, especially when flames move quickly through steep or remote stretches of land.

Anyone in the affected area is advised to follow guidance from local emergency officials and to evacuate promptly if asked to do so. Residents are also encouraged to sign up for local emergency alerts to stay informed about changing conditions.

As of Thursday evening, no injuries had been reported in connection with the fire. The extent of property damage, if any, was also not immediately known.

This is a developing story, and details may change as fire crews continue their response and officials release additional information about the cause, size, and containment status of the blaze.
