Matt Miller accident

Matt Miller, a well-known NFL Draft analyst for ESPN, is recovering after a serious car accident in Missouri last week that led to the amputation of his left arm.

Miller, 42, shared the news himself on Tuesday in a post on social media, telling fans and colleagues that he was lucky to be alive. He said the crash happened in Missouri and that he was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Joplin for emergency treatment.

According to local reporting from KOAM News, the crash took place around 4 p.m. on June 17 in Jasper County. Miller’s 2023 Ford Bronco reportedly crossed the center line and struck a semi truck head-on.

Photos of the Bronco showed extensive damage to the front of the vehicle. The driver of the semi truck was not hurt in the collision.

What Miller Said About His Injuries

In his statement, Miller explained that he suffered several serious injuries in the wreck, including multiple fractures and broken ribs. Doctors also had to perform an emergency amputation of his left arm, which he described as a life-saving procedure.

Miller thanked the people who helped save his life, from the first responders at the scene to the doctors and nurses who treated him at the hospital. He said he felt incredibly fortunate just to be able to write his update at all.

Even with the long recovery ahead of him, Miller struck an optimistic tone. He said he is taking things one day at a time and is already looking forward to getting back to ESPN to cover football again, including the upcoming 2027 NFL Draft class.

Support Pours In From Colleagues

News of the crash and Miller’s injuries quickly spread across the sports media world, with several well-known reporters sending him messages of support.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter wished him a speedy recovery, while NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport told Miller to hang in there.

Miller has built a strong reputation in football media over the years. Before joining ESPN in 2021, he spent more than ten years at Bleacher Report, where he served as the outlet’s lead NFL Draft writer starting in 2010.

He moved into a year-round draft analyst role at ESPN in 2022 and has since become a familiar face on shows like NFL Live and SportsCenter, along with the network’s draft coverage.

Earlier in his career, Miller worked in scouting, serving as director of scouting for New Era Scouting.

He also spent time as a coach and recruiting coordinator for the Joplin Crusaders football program, an experience that helped shape his eye for evaluating talent later in his media career.

As of now, Miller has not given a timeline for when he expects to return to television. His message suggested he is focused on healing first, though he made clear he intends to come back to football coverage once he is able.

Fans and members of the football community continue to send well wishes as he begins what is expected to be a lengthy rehabilitation process following one of the most difficult moments of his life.
