Fresno State Arena Financing
Officials Confident of $103 Mil Donations
By Amy Williams, Staff Writer

FRESNO STATE -- Deborah Adishian-Astone, a Fresno State University official said schematic designs for the Save Mart Arena would be brought to the CSU trustees in January. The proposed on-campus $103 million basketball arena, when built-out, will contaion a 600,000-square-foot complex on the north side of Shaw Avenue just west of Chestnut Avenue.
Cost of the elaborate structur is expected to exceed $60 million. According to officials, the funds will be raised mostly through private donations and the sale of privacy suite licenses.
Recently, however, in response to possibile litigation, Fresno State President John D. Welty, Ed.D., pulled the center from the Trustees' agenda in response to an appeal by Clovis officials who warned the Arena would cause traffic jams as well as noise, water and air pollution for Clovis resdients. Welty's positition in the matter is that Fresno State is legally forbidden from paying for roadway improvements that are off campus property.
In spite of that limitation, Welty told reporters on Tuesday he would help find the $90,000 needed to pay for Clovis street alterations and for adding a turn lane at Shaw and Willow. Welty said the focus can now narrow to fund raising.
