Stephen Ogilvie, the Belfast man who suffered life-changing injuries in a brutal stabbing attack last week, has regained consciousness after being placed in an induced coma, offering a hopeful sign in what remains a long and difficult recovery journey for the 44-year-old victim.
His family confirmed the update on Wednesday through a fundraising appeal established to support his medical and rehabilitation needs.
While they expressed relief that he is now awake, they also acknowledged the significant challenges that still lie ahead following the violent assault that left him with severe injuries to his face, neck, head, and eyes.
According to family members, Ogilvie lost sight in his left eye as a result of the attack and faces the possibility of losing vision in his right eye as well.
They said community support has provided comfort during an incredibly painful period and will help him access the equipment, assistance, and daily living resources he may require in the future.
Family Shares Recovery Update
In a statement shared through the fundraising campaign, Ogilvie’s parents thanked those who have donated, shared the appeal, and kept their son in their thoughts and prayers since the attack.
The family said they were relieved to report that Ogilvie had been taken out of the induced coma and is continuing his recovery in the hospital.
However, they noted that the injuries he sustained will have lasting consequences and that he still faces a lengthy rehabilitation process.
They emphasized that financial support from donors will help provide practical assistance as he adjusts to life after the attack.
The family also highlighted the uncertainty surrounding his eyesight, explaining that while vision in his left eye has already been lost, doctors are continuing to assess the condition of his right eye.
The appeal has attracted widespread attention and support from people across Northern Ireland and beyond. Many contributors have never met Ogilvie or his family, a fact his parents said has left them deeply moved by the generosity shown during such a difficult time.
Attack Sparks Public Attention
The incident occurred in north Belfast and quickly drew national attention because of the severity of the injuries involved. Ogilvie suffered multiple stab wounds and was rushed to the hospital, where medical teams worked to stabilize his condition.
Thirty-year-old Hadi Alodid has been charged in connection with the attack. He faces charges including attempted murder, possession of a knife, and threatening to kill an NHS radiographer. Following a court appearance, he was remanded in custody and is expected to return to court in the coming weeks.
The case has generated significant public discussion, with many people expressing sympathy for Ogilvie and his family. Among those who stepped forward to help was Maitiu Mag Tighearnan, often referred to locally as the “Hero of Belfast” after reportedly intervening during the incident using his son’s hurling bat. Mag Tighearnan later donated £10,000 to support Ogilvie’s recovery.
As Ogilvie continues to recover, his family says the road ahead remains uncertain. Nevertheless, his emergence from the induced coma marks an important milestone and has provided a measure of hope after a traumatic and widely publicized attack.
Supporters continue to rally around the Belfast man, with many hoping that ongoing medical care, rehabilitation, and community assistance will help him rebuild his life in the months and years ahead.
