East Los Angeles: Multiple Shootings Near Whittier Blvd Leave 4 Injured

East La Shooting

EAST LOS ANGELES — A string of shootings tore through this Los Angeles neighborhood Sunday night, leaving four people wounded as crowds spilled into the streets following Mexico’s World Cup exit.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that deputies responded to reports of gunfire near Whittier Boulevard around 9:40 p.m., shortly after Mexico fell 3-2 to England in a Round of 16 match played at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The loss had drawn fans out onto local streets to react, and the shootings unfolded in that same stretch of the neighborhood.

According to initial reports, deputies first found two gunshot victims in the 5900 block of Whittier Boulevard near Lenord Avenue. Minutes later, a second call came in from Amalia Avenue and 6th Street, a few blocks away, where a third victim was located.

A fourth shooting victim was then discovered nearby at Amalia Avenue and Whittier Boulevard. All four were rushed to area hospitals, though authorities have not released updates on their conditions.

Sheriff’s officials initially described the incidents as appearing connected, given their proximity in time and location. However, later reporting indicated the department has since categorized the episode as a single shooting that produced multiple crime scenes, rather than several unrelated incidents. Investigators have not said what triggered the violence.

Aerial coverage from local news helicopters showed a large contingent of sheriff’s vehicles and personnel converging on the area as the investigation got underway. As of Sunday night, no suspect description had been released, and no arrests had been announced.

The unrest came amid heightened tension around the World Cup match, which drew massive attention across Los Angeles given Mexico’s co-host status in this year’s tournament. Ahead of the game’s conclusion, the LAPD had issued a citywide tactical alert, a move typically used to prepare for the possibility of large crowds or unrest tied to major sporting events.

That alert applied broadly across the city, distinct from the East Los Angeles shootings, which fall under the county sheriff’s jurisdiction rather than LAPD’s.

Sunday’s violence adds to a difficult holiday weekend across the Los Angeles region. Separate shootings were reported over the same stretch, including a deadly incident at a Compton Fourth of July gathering that left two people dead and three injured, along with another shooting in San Bernardino that killed one person and wounded three others.

A pedestrian was also struck and killed by a Metro bus near Skid Row during the same period, adding to a string of unrelated tragedies compounding the holiday’s toll on the region.

No further details have been released about a motive or connection between the East Los Angeles shootings and the World Cup match itself, and investigators have cautioned that the timing does not necessarily establish a cause. The Sheriff’s Department said the investigation remains active and asked anyone with information to come forward as detectives continue piecing together what happened along Whittier Boulevard that night.
