Downtown, Nashville, – A 12-year-old boy is dead after a planned fight near downtown Nashville turned deadly Sunday night, and the shooting has sparked outrage and heartbreak across the city.

According to Metro Nashville Police, officers responded around 7:30 p.m. Sunday to reports of gunfire near Rep. John Lewis Way and Deaderick Street.

When they arrived, they found a child suffering from a gunshot wound to the head at Union Terrace. He was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in extremely critical condition, but later died from his injuries. The boy was identified as Damarion Morehead.

Police say a group of about six to seven people, including Morehead, had gathered for what appeared to be a planned fight against 24-year-old Devin Orr.

Investigators say the confrontation started over a female. Video evidence reviewed by detectives reportedly shows the group surrounding Orr and striking him with punches and kicks to the head. At some point, Orr pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired as the group scattered. Morehead was struck and fell to the ground.

Orr later told investigators he hid the gun in a sewer along Charlotte Pike, where officers recovered it. He was arrested Monday morning at a home on Fisk Street and booked on a charge of criminal homicide.

No bond has been set, and his case is scheduled to return to court on Wednesday morning.

Metro Councilmember Jacob Kupin, who represents the downtown district, called the situation heartbreaking and pointed to the dangers of young people having access to firearms during the summer months when school is out.

Davidson County Juvenile Court Judge Sheila Calloway also called the loss of the child devastating for the family and community.

Community reaction pours in online

News of the shooting spread quickly on social media, with a video post from Shauntaye Mayo drawing hundreds of comments. Many people expressed sorrow over the loss of a child while also raising hard questions about supervision and accountability.

Commenter LaTonya Michelle asked who was protecting the man before the group confronted him. Tk Ross argued that people should be more careful about getting involved in fights that are not their own, recalling a time when bystanders only stepped in if someone else jumped into the fight first.

Shermetris Johnson expressed frustration that the kids involved were not at home, calling the situation senseless. Moo Moo suggested the incident had ties to gang activity rather than being an isolated case.

Tyree Bryant said the outcome was tragic but argued that pulling a group of teenagers into a violent confrontation came with serious risk once a weapon was introduced.

The comments reflect a broader frustration shared by many in the Nashville community over youth violence, lack of supervision, and the easy access some teens have to firearms or violent confrontations during summer break.

As the investigation continues, police have not released the ages of the other individuals involved in the fight, aside from Morehead.

The case against Orr is ongoing, and the Nashville community continues to grieve the loss of a child caught up in a violent and avoidable confrontation.
