Irwindale, California – A big rig driver’s unsafe turn triggered a chain reaction crash on the freeway that left one person dead and dozens of others injured, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash unfolded when the truck, a 2016 Freightliner Cascadia heading eastbound, suddenly turned and broke through the center divider.
The trailer then jackknifed across several lanes that were carrying traffic in the opposite direction. CHP officials say the move caught nearby drivers off guard and left them with almost no time to react.
A 2015 Ford Transit traveling in the carpool lane could not avoid the truck and crashed into its front right side.
Moments later, a second vehicle, a 2018 Ford Transit following close behind in the same lane, also collided with the trailer after it was unable to stop in time. The pileup left one woman dead and injured thirty-two other motorists.
Two passengers riding in the lead Transit suffered major injuries, and eight people from the crash overall were taken to area hospitals for treatment.
Emergency crews worked for hours to clear the wreckage, and the collision shut down every westbound lane, along with three eastbound lanes, during the cleanup.
Investigators have not released the truck driver’s name, and CHP says drug or alcohol use is not suspected as a factor at this stage. Anyone who saw what happened or has additional information has been asked to reach out to local CHP investigators directly.
Reactions and Theories Online
The crash quickly drew attention on social media, where commenters traded theories about what might have caused the truck to swerve so suddenly.
Some pointed to a possible tire blowout, suggesting the steer tire failed and sent the driver into a panic before losing control entirely.
Others floated the idea that the driver may have nodded off behind the wheel or suffered a medical emergency, such as a heart attack, since long-haul trucking is known for grueling hours on the road.
One commenter described a detailed sequence, claiming the rig drifted off the right shoulder, struck a guardrail, blew both front tires, and lost steering control of the trailer before it swung left into oncoming lanes.
Several users noted that many trucking companies now equip their fleets with dash cameras, meaning footage from inside the cab could eventually surface and clarify exactly what triggered the crash.
Not everyone agreed on the basic facts, though. A handful of viewers pushed back on early reporting, insisting the video they watched showed the truck clipping the shoulder first rather than making a deliberate turn.
That disagreement highlights how confusing roadway crash footage can be, especially when only a few seconds of video are available before officials release a full report.
Other commenters used the moment to raise broader concerns about highway safety, with some arguing that big rigs and passenger vehicles should not share the same lanes at all, given the size and weight difference.
A few also brought up unrelated worries about commercial drivers and substance use, calling for stricter screening measures across the trucking industry.
For now, the official cause remains under investigation, and CHP has not confirmed which of the public theories, if any, hold up. Updates are expected once toxicology results and any available dash cam footage are reviewed by investigators.
